Abstract

This article summarizes an anthropological research carried out in two festivals of the Municipality of Fundão (Portugal), specifically in the towns of Alcongosta and Alcaide. In the first city, the 2015 “Cherry Festival” was studied and then in the second city, the 2016 “Mushroom Festival”. The objective of the research was to analyze the influence that these festivals have promoting the consumption of the products aforementioned. In order to achieve this objective, two ethnographic observations were carried out by the researchers, which included participant observation, interviews plus oral, photographic and sound data collections. From the analysis of the results obtained in the field work, it has been possible to conclude that a number of parties have been created in these localities outside the traditional religious calendar, with the objective of increasing consumption and the trade of quality local rural products. This new festival cycle, that includes other towns, is intentionally encouraged by municipal authorities with not only the objective of increasing consumption, but also to encourage tourism and visits to these small towns. Therefore, it gives them regional importance and visibility, which they would not have otherwise.
