Resumen

During the spring of 1999 the soils of La Marina park (Zamora, Spain) were restored by the township. After the first winter, during december 1999 and january 2000, part of these soils had been seriously damaged. The soils became soft and muddy and was difficult to walk over them. The underground layers of the park have been studied in the laboratory. This study included identification properties (soil moisture content, particle size analysis with sieves and hydrometer, liquid limit and plastic limit) and permeability. After the study, a deficiency in the drainage of the surface layer, previous to the last restoration, is located as the main factor of this damage. This drainage deficiency has originated local water tables within the more permeable lastplaced layer. This close-to-surface water tables together with freezing effect of the soils during the last january, have originated the soil damage.
