Abstract

Just as the press established itself from the start, but specially in the 20th centrury, as a vehicle to trace world history and its vicissitudes from the perspectives of politics, economics, society and sports, its pages also reflect cultural life, whether international, national or local. As a tribute to the work of the press as chronicler and critic, this article traces the role played by Salamanca newspaper in defining the artistic profile of the capital and its province, choosing as a representative of that perspective the historical discourse of the Varron Gallery. This gallery was responsible not only for bringing the most famous names of the creative avant-garde to Salamanca but also for promoting a movement of aesthetic renovation that influenced both the public and artists, and which was to contribute to bringing creative modernity closer to the public, and opening new ways of seeing, thinking an imagining art.
