Résumé

The study of settlements and territorial hierarchization is key to understand the evolution of the Duero’s Plateau between seventh and ninth centuries. The archaeo-logical evidence highlights the existence of several permanent rural settlements where a population composed basically by peasants lived in the seventh century. But there are also signs of elites and a territorial hierarchization focused on new «third spaces». The eighth century political collapse involved great transformations. Some rural settlements were abandoned, but other survived and other new places emerged. At the same time, the fragmentation sharpened and several new territo-rial hubs were developed. The role of local churches and common lands seems to be important in this evolution and on the landscape before the integration into the Asturian polity.
