Abstract
The relative age effect is defined as the impact that the month of birth may have on the educational or labour careers of people. This article reviews the bibliography on this subject, both at international and domestic levels. The empirical evidence shows that the youngest children on each course get worse results than the oldest ones, in terms of competence, the chances to repeat a course or when choosing one of the most demanding educational options. This effect is different according to the country taken into account, which is related to other features such as the age to enter the compulsory education system, the time when a decision between the academic or professional career has to be made or the grouping of students according to their abilities. In terms of employment results, the existence of such effect is well-documented in the case of elite sports, whereas in employment or salaries fields, its extent is smaller.
