Abstract

The university professor has gone from being a transmitter of knowledge to a facilitator/ supervisor of learning, who must teach to learn but not all students learn the same way. To improve students’ learning it is necessary to know how they learn, that is, what kind of learning styles and strategies they use. The objective of this study is to investigate the the learning style profiles of Medical students of the University of Salamanca to adapt the didactic strategies in the subject of Biostatistics. The results show that the predominant style in Medical students is reflexive (46.3%), followed by theoretical (20.4%), active (19.3%) and pragmatic (11.9%). These students are visual, they learn by reading and there are useful the images and diagrams. Therefore, to place in the Studium Platform educational video-pills with the essentials of theory, handling and interpretation of statistical software, transparencies used in class, more comprehensive notes, bibliography and webgraphy will be of great help. Concept classes, debates and presentations will be particularly attractive in the face-to-face classes. For the active/kinesthetic students the practices are useful, and as they like the field work, collecting data by survey is very attractive. For the pragmatists, the examples related to reality are very useful. In terms of learning strategies, reflexive students mainly use cognitive and learning control strategies, theorists student use learning support strategies and pragmatic use study habits.
