Resumo

In the present state of things there is not privileged or disgusting materials in art, and this situation brings with it the expansion of the artistic freedom line. The text inquires into the idea that «material is blameworthy». It comments how several artists have incorporated explicitily this idea in their artistic work and their writings. In the works of Henri Moore, Eva Hesse, Antony Gormley, Anselm Kiefer and Andrei Tarkovski, we find that use of certain material implies a conscious option with an expresive value and with a personal and aesthetic meaning. All of this suggest us that artist freedom is the possibility of his working with whatever material it may be, but paradoxically this freedom means also that there is no real alternative: When the artist chooses the materials, just at that moment there is only one way to reach directly the things, there is only one way to hit the mark.
