Abstract

Since its creation as a electoral coalition in 1989, the organization of Nuevo Espacio has experienced important changes. This article shows how these shifts have changed the organization from the original coalition model to an unified party. With the purpose of studying its chance as a intermediate-party, several key features of its organization are analysed: the origin, the leadership, the electoral evolution and the organizational structure. Its evolution is a good example of a small party with an important role in the uruguayan political system: a question of supervivence in the middle of the ideological space.
