Resumo
Between 1917 and 1930 J. Ortega y Gasset produced relevant arguments about democracy, the masses, and the role of the cultural elite. Yet while his earlier articles and his well-known book, La rebelión de las masas, had enjoyed wide circulation and appreciation by his contemporaries, they were largely ignored or criticized by recent Political Theory. The ambivalence of "hyperdemocracy" may have played a part in these critical approaches toward the political ideas of Ortega y Gasset. This paper would suggest that Ortega y Gasset was against a disjointed public sphere, recalling moreover that political institutions and social relationship follow different rules.
