Abstract
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder and is common complaint. Is defined by the Rome III criteria. Its chronic course and severity have a significant impact on quality of life and healthcare resource utilization. The role of motility and visceral hypersensitivity is considered an important pathophysiological mechanism. More recent studies have highlighted the role of serotonin, microinflammation, the intestinal flora and bacterial overgrowth. Its diagnosis is based on symptoms; the use of complementary examinations should be limited and notarized. Drug treatment is performed according to the predominant symptom and is very important stablish a "therapeutic" relation doctor-patient. We can make changes in lifestyle, exclude those foods or drugs that can precipitate symptoms and treat associated psychological disorders.
