Abstract

This study focuses on the current problem of culture clash from the viewpoint of someone whose entire life has been and continues to be a translation. Moroccan-born writer Najat El Hachmi identifies with Catalunya, her home for over half her life, though she still feels rejected by some, shunned by others and victimized by the problems her fathers violent abuse caused her. The article focuses particularly on her first essay, entitled Jo també sóc catalana (2004) and her first novel, Lúltim patriarca (2008), works in which the author reflects on language, the role of translation and questions of gender and religion from a non-essentialist critical stance towards both her source and target cultures. She invites her readers to listen not to a single melody but to a harmony of often dissonant chords which show that culture is comprised of intersecting centrifugal and centripetal discourses. Through these clashing discourses, El Hachmi gives us glimpses of how dialogue should, under the best of circumstances, lead to a world with much broader horizons for all.
