Abstract

In recent years, there has been considerable advance in the knowledge of the neurobiological disorders involved in the effect of alcohol, so that the number of drugs available for the treatment of this dependence has increased. Treatment of alcohol dependence consists of two phases: desintoxication and dishabituation. The general objectives of the treatment are to relieve the abstinence symptoms and prevent the appearance of severe manifestations of abstinence and to achieve abstinence and its indefinite maintenance. To reach these objectives, different therapeutic strategies are used, as psvchopharmacological treatment, psychotherapy techniques (individual, family and group) and social interventions. The choice of the specific type of treatment should be made considering the characteristics of the disease, needs of the patient and the patient's preferences. The challenge of assigning each patient the most adequate personalized treatment has not been solved as of vet, although the results of the pharmacogenetic research are promising.
