Zusammenfassung

The Vibration Induced Nystagmus (VIN) is a useful, easy, non-invasive examination that involves an asymmetry of the vestibular function. Applying a 100Hz vibration over the mastoid process induces a horizontal nystagmus beating towards the normal side in patients with unilateral vestibular loss. In this paper we show the physiological foundations, practical conditions and the interpretation of the results. Methods: Narrative review. Discussion and conclusions: VIN starts with stimulation onset and it stops at stimulation offset. It has the same direction when you stimulate both mastoids. It shows a little or no habituation and it is permanent even in well compensated patients.
