Abstract

The authors study the ocular toxicity of C₃F₈ in an experimental animal model. It is shown that C₃F₈ promotes an intense neutrofile-macrofagic inflammatory reactions most evident at the level of the ciliary processes. Transmission electron microscopy shows a complete conservation of the ultrastructure of the retina in spite of such inflammatory events. It is concluded that C₃F₈ is atoxic for the retina, but that it's use should be careful considerated in cases with preexisting neovascular retinopathies or active proliferative vitreoretinopathy because of the hazards that this gas could have on the evolution of such retinal complications.
