Abstract

Objectives: To determine the level of performance in activities of daily life for people with severe and prolonged mental illness treated in different resources of the province of Salamanca. Methodology: The study involved 51 people diagnosed with mental illness, which we applied the Spanish adaptation of the BELS (Basic Everyday Living Schedule), which assesses the degree of opportunity and performance level in 26 activities divided into 4 areas; selfcare, domestic skills, community skills, social activities and relationships Results: People with severe and prolonged mental illness have low levels of autonomy, indicating severe problem or frequent need a suggestion by classification BELS. These difficulties have been obtained, especially in áreas related to home care activities, being those related to self-care which get higher scores. Activities related to the community are those obtained lower scores in the degree of opportunity. Discussion: These results are consistent with investigations which were obtained low levels of autonomy in this population. Conclusions: These results highlight the need to provide the necessary support to improve performance in these activities, to promote independent living in the community and quality of life.
