Resum

Objectives: To analyze the available laser protocols for treating ceramic surfaces prior to bracket bonding, to describe the femtosecond laser irradiation protocol followed by the bracket bonding method and to describe and illustrate the methods for the analysis of the bond strength and surface characterization. Material and methods: A literature review was conducted to identify studies about ceramic surface conditioning by laser devices prior to bracket bonding. The protocol of ceramic surface irradiation with femtosecond laser was described as well as the bracket bonding method, the bond strength tests and the methods of surface characterization (profilometry, scanning electron microscopy and adhesive failure mode). Results: Fourteen studies were identified, which used 4 different laser types with different parameters. Feldspathic ceramic was the most commonly reported and the thermocycling and bond strength protocols were similar for most of the publications. Figures illustrating the results of the surface characterization methods are presented. Conclusions: The femtosecond laser irradiation protocol is effective for bracket-ceramic bonding. The shear bond strength test at 0.5 mm/min is the most commonly used adhesion analysis method. The Adhesive Remnant Index is the ideal to analyze the adhesive failure.
