Abstract

In 1857, the Spanish Royal Academy of Language published two textbooks for teaching grammar: the Compendio and the Epítome. In this study, I shall emphasize two aspects: firstly, the change in audience between the Gramática of 1854 (the preceding text) and the Gramática of 1858 (as a result of having published the two textbooks) that clearly determines the new Gramática on a material level while leaving the theoretical framework and the doctrine unchanged; secondly, the criteria for textbook adaptations, which do not seem to go beyond the need for shorter sections, with subtle or dramatic text removal (Compendio and Epítome, respectively).
