Abstract

The Mediterranean region was particularly sensitive to climatic and hydrological changes of millennial-centennial scale occurred during the last glacial cycle. Detailed studies carried out in the IMAGES core MD 95-2043 (Alboran Sea) indicate a synchrony between changes in sea surface temperature (SST) and in the vegetation cover of the Iberian Peninsula. End-member modelling of grain-size distributions and Si/AI record large millennial oscillations indicating an increase of Saharan eolian dust input to the Western Mediterranean during cold stadials. These results point to the atmospheric circulation as the main mechanism responsible for the interlatitudinal transmission of rapid climatic variability thus adding further elements to the debate about the driving mechanisms of the D/O variability in the Mediterranean region and in higher latitudes.
