Abstract
Economic geography is increasing its focus on the so‐called alternative economic practices during the last decade. Alternative economic practices may be defined as circuits of economic coordination (production, distribution, consumption, finance) which are under‐institutionalized, promote values like cooperation, sustainability, and solidarity, take part on wider social innovation strategies, wish to transform political and socio‐economic capitalist structures and usually operate in the local level to profit from the advantages of continuous interpersonal interaction in order to achieve their goals. This paper identifies those practices in Salamanca, accounts for their distribution in the urban arena and suggests a preliminary explanation for their location patterns. These new economic proposal are clustered in the core of the city, where retail and population density is very high and income per capita is above average.
