Abstract

This thesis develops an available lexicon dictionary in the fourth year of Secondary Education in Santander. It is a parallel investigation to Panhispanic Project of Available Lexicon (PPHDL) driven by Humberto López Morales since 1973. This investigation saw the need to begin the study with a trip through the history of lexical availability, both in Latin America and Spain, and to number the large applications that these studies have in other disciplines such as Sociolinguistics, Dialectology, Etnolinguist, Psycholinguistics, etc. Later, after a brief rational of our study in the Secondary Education level, we developed the demographic and socio-economic framework of the research in the context of the city of Santander. In terms of methodology we continued with the principles mentioned on Panhispanic Project of Available Lexicon (PPHDL). We have worked with a significant volume of surveys to extend the results to the whole province at this level. Thanks to the computerization of data through the program Dispolex, we analyzed the influence of different social factors such as sex, type of school, location of school, country or urban origin and social class on the available lexicon, both quantitatively and qualitatively. In conclusion to this analysis we observed that there are many social factors that are clearly relevant to the lexical productivity of the students, the most important of them are: sex and social class. It has been demonstrated by this and other studies about lexical availability. In addition, the social environment in which students develop their lives is crucial in their lexical productivity. On the other hand, this information promotes the possibility of establishing comparisons with other geographical areas where similar projects have been carried out. In fact, we have compared our results with other Spanish coastal towns within the framework of the centre of interest: The sea: fishing and fish Finally, we developed a practical class applicable to Secondary Education which serves as a model for lexical planning and programming in schools in order to improve the lexical competence of our students.
