Osteoporosis is the most common metabolic bone disease and, undoubtedly, the major determinant factor in the development process of fractures in individuals over 50 years. Hip fracture is the most serious complication of osteoporosis due to its significant morbidity and mortality. As osteoporosis is a disease linked to the aging process, the involution associated with age favors its appearance. During the second half of the twentieth century, the incidence rates of hip fracture in women and in men in most countries, had been studied, in order to establish its secular trend, to implement effective prevention programs and planning the health spending. The objective of this thesis is to analyze the changes occurred in the incidence of hip fracture in Cantabria between 1988 and 2010 and identify the variables involved in the evolution of the secular trend of hip fracture in our region.
