Laburpena

Daily language is full of assumptions about the historical continuity of groups, especially nations. The notion of process widely used by historians leans on a temporal conception of nations which is too greatly shaped by the nationalist mindset. Using Theseus’ paradox, this paper argues that the construction of nations (as well as other collective entities) may be better understood as a chain of reproductions without any driving force. It also argues that the classic idea of continuity does not stem from epistemic purposes but from a historicist meta-narrative. Overcoming this story of false coherence, which historians of nationalism have been challenging for so long, would improve our epistemic relationship with the past. However, it would also bring about uncomfortable consequences to the political and moral realms.
