Abstract

Marine and terrestrial pleistocene deposits relationship were established according to geomorphological and sedimentary facies analysis studies in Pessegueiro cliff. Prequaternary substratum formed by carboniferous phyllites underlies marine conglomerates covered by alluvial fan deposits with interbedded paleosols. The climatic factor controlled the sediment supply to the coast and the pedogenic processes that generated the red paleosols interbedded in the alluvial fan deposits. Agradational phases have been recognized with intervening periods of inactivity that coincided with episodes of paleosol generation. The humid climatic conditions that favoured the supply of sediment to the fans were followed by alternating humid and arid periods; the first promoted clay illuviation, and the second the rubefaction. The alluvial pedosedimentary sequence is sealed by cemented dunes dated by OSL about 130 Ka, then according to the geomorphological mapping and other datings along coastal cliffs, lower marine level underlying the whole sequence corresponds to middle Pleistocene.
