Abstract

/\ hillside about 5 km long and 160 m high is situated to the northeast of Cabezón de Pisuerga village (Valladolid province, Spain, Duero Central Basin). The subsurface geology consists mainly of M iocene horizontal clays, marls and sands, with limestones at the top. This defines a typical tabular morphology of the Central Duero Basin. The Pisuerga river erosion has originated big slopes in the hillside and frequent soil instability problems namely: rotational soil slides, which involve from a few hundreds cubic meters up to more than two million of cubic meters; soil topple and/or soil collapse in vertical cliffs up to 80 metres high and small mud flows. The areas with present-day or recent instability match mainly with the ones in which the three Pisuerga meanders approach the hillside. Historic records of instabilities affecting Cabezón de Pisuerga and destroying several buildings are described.
