Abstract

The micropaleontological study of the Alamedilla section has allowed us to show significant planktic foraminlferal assemblage turnovers from upper Santonlan to middle Campanian. Two extinction events have been identified, closely connected with sea-level falls, across both the Santonian-Campanian boundary and the lower-middle Campanian boundary. The first extinction event coincides with an amplification of oxygen minimum zone (OAE3). The second event is related to a decrease in sea surface temperature coinciding with the LMCE event. The first appearances of certain species of planktic foraminifera are also frequent and could coincide with sea-level rises.
