Abstract
This article aims to analyze the different possibilities of motherhood contemplated in Maria Messina’s short stories published in the first decades of the 20th century and, specially, the forms of motherhood beyond the biological one. It starts from the maternal absence – either the mother is dead, or she does not comply with the typical duties of a mother – in order to expose broad typologies of surrogate motherhood that in successive decades will have a very great interest both by society and by scholars of very varied disciplines.
