Resumen

The Almazul Mudstone Formation (Fm) and the Mazaterón Limestone Fm are within the first UTS of the Palaeogene succession of the Almazán basin and they both correspond to detrital distal alluvial fan deposits with intercalations of calcretes, dolocretes and palustrine limestones. The Almazul Fm, that forms the lower two thirds of the UTS, consists of nodular to nodular-massive calcrete and dolocrete that are superimposed on the detrital facies (mudstones and sandstones) of the distal alluvial fans. The Mazaterón Limestone Fm, at the upper one third of the UTS, shows a facies association consisting of brown/greyish green mudstone —> calcrete —> dolocrete —> palustrine limestone, which represents the progressive installation of a free shallow water body. On the whole, the first sequence in the Almazán basin represents the progressive development of a carbonate palustrine system.
