The Use of Canonical Correlation Analysis and Heliograph for Explaining Patterns of Political Integration Among Migrants in Host Societies

Resumen

Canonical correlation analysis is a robust quantitative method for exploring the values related to two sets (independent and dependent) of variables. The study of patterns of political integration of migrants in host societies fits perfectly to this methodological rule. In this research, canonical correlation analysis was applied for detecting how different explanatory variables are producing different levels of civic competencies among youngsters with migrant and native background in Spain. Canonical correlation analysis results are generally visualized through non-reader-friendly tables. On the contrary, in this opportunity, the empirical evidence is shown through heliographs. This is an innovative method of data visualization in which information related to different subsamples is seen simultaneously. Readers of this case study will learn when and under which circumstances it is appropriate to use both innovative methods.
