Abstract

The apparent overconsolidation in the first centimeters of the marine sedimentary column is studied. With this purpose, box corer sampling has been used in an area located in the Gulf of Cadiz, where no evidences of mechanic overconsolidation exist. The unidimensional consolidation tests performed with different types of water (marine and distilled) and with different load steps in intensity and duration indicate the phenomenon is related neither with the chemistry nor the duration of the consolidation in each step with load progressing geometrically. However, when simulating a slow sedimentation with very low increases in loads, the secondary consolidation are particularly highlighted, which indicates that apparent consolidation phenomenon should be associated with a secondary consolidation generated by physicochemical processes developing strong bonds between particles.
