Abstract

This paper reports results of a study whose aims were to determine the factors that change the number of followers of the Top20 Twitter users in Latin America and Middle East. Public profiles of the 20 most seen users (N= 154 users) in Colombia, Chile, Mexico and Venezuela (for Latin America), and Iran, Libya, Tunes and Egypt (fro the Middle East) were determined. Content analysis of the last 20 available tweets published by the users (N= 2.344 tweets) was also made. A statistical analysis was performed to determine which factors were significant to the variability of followers. The findings show little differences among the users’ profiles in both regions (such as language) but evidence a clear global profile: men with open or public profile, frequent users of Twitter and related to Arts, Fashion and Journalism fields. The statistical models used in this study show that users related to these fields, as well as everyday users (intensive role in Twitter), have a greater possibility of obtaining followers. In the case of contents, was found that messages with positive or neutral attitudes gain more followers. In contrast with previous studies, the present findings indicate that the profiles of users of both regions are maintained in time, and that the factor analysis model applied in this study may be applied in other countries and regions of the world.
