Zusammenfassung

The ancient Roman city of Complutum (Alcalá de Henares, Madrid) was founded in the first century AD and it was one of the most important cities of Hispania. Complutum was destroyed, abruptly abandoned, relocated in a new location and rebuilt in the fourth century AD. The destruction of the city and its new locationis still a mystery to the archaeologists. In this paper we show different earthquake archaeological effects (EAEs) affecting the La Magdalena site (an agricultural holding located 4 km away from the core of Complutum). The most important earthquake geological effect affecting the site is the occurrence of liquefactionprocesses (sand dikes and gravel blow craters)affecting roman facilities, such as water tanks, houses or tombs. Several archaeological sites of Roman origin were abruptly abandoned along theHenares valley simultaneously with La Magdalena site and Complutum, in some cases with EAEs with similar origin to those recorded at la Magdalena site that could be associated with the same event that destroyed this site. These EAEs could be associated toan earthquake of Mw=5.0-6.6, using the empirical limit of liquefactionand fault coseismic rupture.
