Abstract
With the purpose of determining how geological processes affect the mechanical behavior of overconsolidated clays of continental origin, reconstituted, sedimented and natural samples of the Viso Clay have been studied under unidimensional compression. When sedimented, the clays adopt an structure which strength the soil, but its effect disappears with pressures higher than the preconsolidation pressure. Important differences are observed when comparing the sedimented consolidation line (SCL) obtained in laboratory with the SCL plotted with data from the natural samples, being interpreted as a consequence of the postsedimentary processes. Finally, yielding in the natural consolidation lines (NCL) occurs at pressures which cannot be related with the maximum lithostatic pressure over the Viso Clays.
