Abstract
The Urao lake in the Venezuelan Andes is known by the precipitation of Na and Na-Ca carbonates (gaylussite and trona). This paper describes the recent sedimentology of the Urao lake. Sediment samples from the palustrine areas and six cores from the lake bottom have been collected. Four of the six cores extracted a record of at least 120 cm long of the sediment fill. One of them even recovered 212 cm of sediments. The X-Ray Difraction (XRD) analyses of the lake sediment reveal the dominant siliciclastic composition (quartz, moscovite, clorite). Calcite and analcime are the main authigenic minerals precipitated in the lake. There are no evidences in the recent record (212 cm) of the gaylussite and trona reported in this lake. Two levels containing paleoseismites at 40-60 cm and 100-120 cm have been identified.
