Resumen

his study analyses, first of all, the different values of the cantaba form in 26 Spanish grammars and manuals aimed at French speakers during the 19th century. Then, it contrasts such grammatisation with that obtained in a corpus of similar characteristics intended for English speakers, with the aim of reconstructing in the most comprehensive way the different nuances and semantic-functional categories of this form according to the students’ mother tongue (as a linguistic system of comparison) and the different linguistic traditions in which the works are inserted. The results show two clearly differentiated tendencies (while allowing to establish punctual author-bridges between both hispanisms): while Anglo-Saxon Hispanism stops treating in detail the tempo-aspectual differences of cantaba with respect to canté, French prefers to highlight other less prototypical values related to modality and evidentiality.
