Resumo
This paper addresses two fundamental issues. First, we study the idea of past as a continuum to which it is possible to apply the concepts of progress and natural perfection. Second, we investigate the way in which these two concepts are related to literary history. The text analyzes the different ways in which Enlightenment interpreted the historicity of literature (the existing correlation between enlightened thinking and the theoretical ideals aimed at the creation of literary works, the perspective used in its reception, the valuation of the idea of the national and the formulation of judgments by comparison). As a particular case, we also study the comments on the eclogue and the poetry of Garcilaso de la Vega
