Resumo

One of the fundamental purposes of Renaissance historiography was to expose to its recipients a series of moral teachings based on examples drawn from past events. To accomplish this end, the historiographical discourse had to be presented in a way as credible as persuasive; for this reason, rhetoric assumed a crucial position in this process, since its resources contributed to articulate a sobering and, above all, convincing story. Therefore, History conformed a rhetorical truth, since not only was it interested in the strict chronological narration of a succession of past episodes, but it also tried to move its recipients to assimilate in an appropriate way their teachings of an ethical order. In this regard, oratory provided techniques such as amplifications based on the recreation of statements in direct style, which were optimal to reveal the exemplary or reprehensible character of a certain historical figure. In order to specify this issue, our work will analyze a curious chronicle about the battle of Pavia attributed to the Dominican Juan de Oznaya. In this work, there are many speeches written in the form of oratio recta, which are as interesting as they are significant. We intend to study the different interventions in direct style included in the Oznaya text, to try to elucidate what their functions are within the chronicle as a whole and to observe which rhetorical strategies they present in each case.
