Abstract

It has been found that the drag speed of the testing machine trolley clearly influences on environmentally assisted cracking. However, and despite the importance that kinematic variables seem to have in the description of EAC mechanisms, a gap has been found in terms of scientific publications that analyse the problem from a mechanical point of view and the existing ones they state their conclusions without focusing on the kinematic problem that takes place at crack tip. This paper tries to describe the kinematic variables at the crack tip that are considered relevant in EAC processes. Thus, the temporary derivatives of stresses and strains in different areas of interest of the crack tip are analysed by means of a high-resolution model applying the finite element method to a geometry that simulates a cylindrical specimen with an edge crack. The results of the kinematic variables at the crack tip are presented, including both the surface of the crack tip and the area in front of it.
