Résumé

Kim Thúy is a Vietnamese author who fled to Canada with her family due to the political upheavals caused by the Communist forces in Vietnam. Despite the difficulties experienced during her journey from Vietnam to Canada, Thúy overcame the cultural, social, and political barriers that all refugees have to confront in a new country. After graduating from Montreal University with a degree in Translation, Linguistics, and Law, Thúy decided to devote her life to writing. It is at this point that she bravely broke the silence which has been imposed on Vietnamese people, thus unravelling the hidden reality of Vietnamese history. In this sense, Thúy became an active agent in Canada, where she published different novels dealing with the Vietnamese Canadian experience. Despite the powerful content of her novels, Thúy has not made a name for herself in academia as her narratives have not received the attention they deserve. Therefore, this article attempts to bring to the forefront a female author who uses literature as a powerful means to expose the traumatic events experienced by many Vietnamese people, especially Vietnamese women, and its consequences. Through the study of the episodes shown in Ru, Thúy’s debut novel, it will be possible to disclose the darkest, forgotten and hidden part of Vietnam’s history
