Resum

A new magnetostratigraphic study of the Paleogene continental infill of the Almazán basin is presented, combining magnetostratigraphic and biostratigraphic data. The studied section ranges from the northern margin of the basin throughout the northeastern limb of the Gómara monocline. This study includes the alluvial sediments of the Almazul Fm. (230m), which represents together with the underlying El Hocino Fm. the beginning of the sedimentation in the basin, the palustrine-lacustrine limesotnes of the Mazaterón Fm. (170 m) and the fluvial sandstones of the Gómara Fm. (2250 m). The resulting polarity sequence allows a correlation with the geomagnetic polarity time scale (GPTS), where the base of the studied section (Almazul Fm.) is in the chron C20, therefore a Lutetian (Eocene) age can be ascribed to its base. The Gómara Fm. represents the rest of the Bartonian, Priabonian and the most of the lower Oligocene, hence including the Eocene-Oligocene boundary. The top of the section is near the ChattianRupelian (Oligocene) boundary within the chron C10. From this correlation, the age of the Mazaterón and Miñana mammal sites, attributed to the MP15-16 mammal Paleogene reference levels, would be established in the lower Bartonian.
