Resumo
The purpose of this research is to study the use of Catholic elements in the political discourse of Venezuelan former President Chávez, analyzing the use of symbols and religious metaphors in his pronouncements, his closeness to Liberation Theology, his relationship with the Church as an institution and the social function of the Christian elements in his speeches. For that purpose, we will use as our main source of study the annual report and accounts addresses given before the National Assembly. As a result, the use of religious referents in Chávez’s discourse as a legitimizing mean of his political project is evidenced.
