Objectives: The purpose of this article is to present some reflections and experiences in teaching and learning medical terminology within the framework of training physicians and dentists. It starts from the premise that the reality of a profession inevitably conditions what must be taught and how to teach it. Ultimately, that reality dictates the skills and competencies that the students in these fields must acquire, as well as the teaching method used to acquire those competencies. Method: We will begin this article by outlining the contextual framework in which terminology instruction is situated, as well as the usefulness to future professionals of a solid knowledge of terminology. To do so, we will define the concept of terminological competence, which has been addressed by other authors. We will then explain our methodological proposal in relation to this concept. Results: We will present the results of our teaching work when using this proposal with our students who studied this subject matter. The results will allow us to draw conclusions that may reaffirm the usefulness of the method but will also direct us to some corrections to make in the future for the most effective acquisition of the competencies that interest us.
