Abstract

Commercial software based on the Finite Element Method (FEM) is extensively used by professionals in the field of structural engineering. However, it is not common to make use of this tool for education at the undergraduate level. Therefore, some students were invited to study the mechanical behaviour of a structure subjected to static and dynamic (seismic) loads with the help of FEM software as part of their Bachelor’s thesis. As a result, these students got an in-depth knowledge of the fundamentals of finite element method as well as of handling a particular FEM software. In addition, they acquired some other relevant skills concerning the ability of searching and understanding information, assessing the outcome of the FEM software in a critical way, writing well organized reports and presenting and defending their work in public.
