Wine tourism is based around wine, vineyards, and wine regions. Moreover, the touristic potential of the activities directly related to the wine world –visits to vineyards and wineries or wine tasting– is often linked with other complementary activities –such as enjoying heritage attractions, cultural events, winescapes or gastronomy– which are characteristic of the wine region. The aim of this paper is to describe the viability of including geology-related activities within wine tourism programs. Therefore, a proposal is presented to organize wine routs or itineraries focused on the geological setting of the wine region not only to promote wine tourism, but also to make geology more accessible and understandable to wine tourists. Some initiatives and proposals made in France, Italy and Spain will be also discussed.
