Abstract

The activity of the Dominicans in the Convent of San Esteban of Salamanca since their arrival in Chiapas in the sixteenth century has aroused a special interest in various areas of historiography, which positions the subject as a recurring object of analysis. Thanks to this factor, several research paths are currently open in order to better comprehend this historical situation. The characteristic rigorous formation of the Order of Preachers guaranteed the establishment of an increasingly strong social system from the beginning. It is in this breeding ground where a new social-cultural panorama is born, characterized by the translation of visual and verbal languages between two very differentiated worlds. In this article, we intend to demonstrate the bidirectional nature of these exchanges and the adaptation from both parties, emphasizing in the study of Dominican convents and churches as a result of the implementation of the Hispanic tradition in the American context. The visual culture and the knowledge of the friars are reflected in their works and pedagogical resources, providing valuable information from different perspectives.
