We performed a quantitative study of some planktonic foramini-fer species from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Site U1313 todefine main biostratigraphic events. Some of these events werecharacterized by large changes in species abundance rather thantheir first or last occurrences. Ch anges in relative abundances ofplanktonic foraminifers were co mpared to the color reflectanceand magnetostratigraphic records measured at this site. We ob-tained astronomical ages for all these events through calibrationto the isotope timescale. Comparison of these ages with the astro-nomical dates derived from the Mediterranean indicates thatmost of the events were synchronous in the mid-latitudes of theNorth Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
