Resum

We present the first results of the geotechnical characterization of sediments in the area of the Galicia Bank. The deformability is determined from oedometer tests and resistance from CU triaxial and Vane test. The results obtained indicate that the sediment is overconsolidated (OCR>1), having being estimated a loss of sediment load between 9 and 12 meters. The uppermost meter of the sediment displays an apparent overconsolidation possibly produced, among other factors, by bioturbation, cementation and/or secondary consolidation. According to the strength tests done, we have located two levels of weakness, between 2.5 and 3 m, and at 7.2 m, respectively, that could act as detachment levels for an eventual mass-movement event.
