Abstract
The written sources of the period from the 9th to 12th centuries show the Duero Basin as an area where castles stand out as places of importance for the affirmation of power over the territory. This article proposes a general view of these fortified spaces in different contexts of armed conflict as seen in written sources. Its main aim is to analyse their role and look for transformations concer-ning their military identity, both within the fights between Al-Andalus and the Christian kingdoms and in those that arose between and within the latter.
