Resumo

The noise level in urban environments is usually measured using an equivalent A-weighted sound pressure level, where the evaluation criterion is specially directed to health protection and human welfare. Nevertheless, the impact of noise on birds should be evaluated considering only the range of frequencies that interferes with their communication signals: the "speech interference level". We made an assessment of the noise level in three areas along an urban gradient (urban, periurban and rural) where two bird species were recorded: the common blackbird (Turdus merula) and the wren (Troglodytes troglodytes). The acoustic descriptors used in this research express the noise level within the range of frequencies of bird vocalizations. It is suggested that this method could be more suitable to assess the acoustic impact on birds because it represents the actual interference between anthropogenic noise and bird songs.
