Abstract

This paper contends that there is a social myth that surrounds Archaeology, obscuring its actual content and creating a gap between its practice and practitioners, and the society of which they are part. This paper aims to study the social perception of Archaeology and the archaeologists as a means to assess a problem that might have serious implications for both the discipline and its professionals. An analysis of mass media, cinema and literature has enabled us to put forward some of the main aspects of this problem. This has lead to a discussion on its causes and to a consideration of possible strategies to overcome it.
