Abstract

Inscribed on one of the blocks that conform the base for the famous Nike of Paionios of Mende lies the joint dedication that Messenians and Naupactians set in the sanctuary of Olympia ca. 421 B.C. (IvO 259), a monument that is particularly interesting regarding one of the most remarkable episodes in Messenian history, a population that was enslaved by their Laconian neighbours for more than four centuries. The inscription allows a detailed linguistic, paleographic and historical commentary, as well as sheds some light on the life of its author.
